Reproductive Programs and Services

Regularly schedule fertility visits are the best way to improve reproductive efficiency.  These allow our doctors to work with your farm to create an effective breeding program and monitor the results by providing timely pregnancy diagnosis.  The use of controlled breeding programs has proven effective and timesaving for many of our producers.  With any reproductive program the goal is to get cows bred back in a timely fashion.  The key to success of these programs is to find the cows that are NOT pregnant early and return them to the breeding group.  These programs can be customized to fit the needs of individual herds.  We can provide both traditional pregnancy diagnosis by rectal palpation and ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis, which can detect pregnancies as early as 29 or 30 days. Please check out the ultrasound link under FAQ.

We also offer Breeding Soundness Exams on bulls that are at least 12 months old. This evaluates the bull’s potential as a successful breeder. This is essential for beef herds or dairy herds that need to use a bull. Having a Breeding Soundness Exam done can entice buyers of bulls and also prevent costly losses in reproductive efficiency.

Vaccination & Parasite Control Programs
Few things in the cattle business have changed as fast as vaccines coming onto the market.  Even with recent drug company mergers and acquisitions the total number of different vaccines on the market for cows has grown and making a decision can be difficult.  We can assist in implementing programs to help protect herds from major problems in our area.  All herds are different so customizing a vaccine protocol to herd specifications is a vital step in a successful operation.  Customizing vaccine programs are also important for both heifers and steers.

Parasite control is often not of thought.  Recent research has shown that resistance to common parasites is growing rapidly as the same controlling agents are chosen time and time again.  With a solid parasite control program the health of the animals greatly improve.

Sick Cow Medicine & Surgery
Even the most well-managed farms have animals that get sick.  Many times we can identify the problem with a thorough physical exam.  If needed, we can also perform bloodwork either in the clinic or through a diagnostic lab.  This is especially helpful in down cows or puzzling cases.  In addition, our clinic does over 600 surgeries per year on cows alone.  We also have in-clinic facilities for calves that need surgery for umbilical hernia repair or sick calves that would benefit from continued monitoring and treatment.
Scripting & Protocol Services
We can help design on-farm treatment protocols for those wishing to administer treatments themselves.  This can be done within the guidelines of a client-patient relationship so that it is legal, effective and safe.  We can set up scripting to a local supplier or drugs can be picked-up at the clinic or off the veterinarian’s truck during a farm visit.  Our clinic has a full service pharmacy.  We can also help setup drug budgets and direct you to the best cost options when ordering.
Milk Quality Services
Our clinic has a mastitis lab in-house, giving us the ability to culture individual cows for mastitis. We have the ability to send any sample to labs for further diagnostics.  Reviewing the milking procedures and discussing the milking equipment with a trained individual can quickly assist in your milk quality program. We have the ability to help train and assist in management of milk parlors.
Records Analysis
Keeping a good eye on the records of a farm is the quickest way to tell if there is a problem and where it may lie. Monthly records analysis are available and encouraged for better management.
Regulatory Services
Requirements for moving animals out of Wisconsin vary with the state they are traveling to.  For a list of state requirements see the following website; http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/animal_import/animal_imports_states.shtml. These regulations can change frequently and may not be up to date online.  We can determine the requirements for testing and health certificates.  Call in advance so that testing can be completed by the time your shipping date arrives. This is especially true for Canadian exports as this often takes several weeks.
